Information on health insurance in Switzerland

When is health insurance compulsory in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, you’ll be insured with a health insurance company (‘Krankenkasse’), which pays the costs of medical treatment.

Everyone who is resident in Switzerland must have health insurance in Switzerland, i.e. everyone with a C, B, L permit or a Swiss passport.

There is one exception –

EU citizens resident in Germany, Austria, France and Italy who go home at least once a week don’t have to take out health insurance.

If you’re working with a 90-day permit, you’ll need to have health insurance in your home country. You should also find out about the European Health Insurance Card in your home country. Depending on the country and the situation, this card is also valid in Switzerland.
