Do you work at a well-known address?

The Red Light Unit of the cantonal police regularly carries out unannounced checks there.

You have to let the police in if your place of work is an adult entertainment establishment with an operating licence, or in a micro-business. But they’re not allowed to just search your things.

A search is only justified if they have a concrete reason to suspect you’re hiding something they need to seize. This could be evidence for possible criminal proceedings or a prohibited object such as a weapon. If the police can’t clearly establish your identity without a search, they’re also allowed to go through your belongings.

Tips:

  • In Switzerland, police officers have to show their ID. Ask for the police officer’s ID. Ask for the police officer to give you their card, or to write down their name and number.
  • After the check, make a note of what happened. What did the police say? What did you say? What happened? Did anyone witness the check?
  • Think in advance about how you would want to behave during a check.
  • You can say you’re busy.

The police often behave correctly. But sometimes they make mistakes. If you think the police have violated your rights, contact an advisory service. If someone witnesses the check, ask them if they can provide a statement.
