Who carries out checks on sex workers and businesses in the canton of Bern?
There are different types of checks in the canton of Bern. Not all police officers have the same roles. Ask who they are, and if they can give you their card.
Cantonal police, Red Light Unit (Fachstelle Rotlicht)
These police officers work in plain clothes. They are responsible for a particular region. They check your papers. They also answer questions about sex work. They give you a card with a mobile phone number.
Sometimes they’re together with police officers who specialise in human trafficking.
Licensing authority (Gewerbepolizei)
Licensing authority officers work in plain clothes. They check the establishment you work for.
Immigration authority (Fremdenpolizei)
In the cities of Bern, Thun and Biel, checks are also made by immigration authority officers. They check your papers, ask about your working conditions and advise you on issues relating to immigration law.
Uniformed police
Uniformed cantonal police officers don’t specialise in sex work. They come, for example, when someone calls the police or when there’s a property search.
