Hepatitis B (HBV)

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes an infectious inflammation of the liver.
Hepatitis B is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids from people who already have the virus. Transmission occurs primarily via blood and genital secretions,
which usually happens through sexual contact. Because you have a lot of sexual contact as a sex worker, this means you are at a higher risk.

Acute hepatitis B usually disappears completely on its own, and once it does you’re immune and won’t be infected again.
But you could develop chronic hepatitis B, which involves taking medication for the rest of your life. Without treatment, hepatitis B can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

The key recommendations, which you may already be familiar with, are as follows:

  • Always use a new condom when changing positions, including for oral and anal sex.
  • Disinfect your sex toys.
  • Always use new gloves and your own lubricant.
  • Do not share equipment when consuming substances.
  • If a client has genital warts, terminate contact and refuse service.
  • Get vaccinated against hepatitis B! If you have Swiss health insurance, the vaccination is free
